In Bari, Italy, on the 21st of November 2025,  IDEATION, together with Società Acque del Sud and Acquedotto Pugliese, is organising a major event dedicated to the development of Digital Twins for inland waters, fully interoperable with the future EU Digital Twin Ocean. The meeting will take place on 21 November 2025 at the Palazzo dell’Acqua in Bari and will be held entirely in Italian.

The event will bring together institutions, water utilities, basin authorities, universities, research centres and territorial actors for a full day of exchange on real operational needs, use cases, and data architectures supporting digital transformation in the water sector.

The programme will explore how Digital Twins—powered by reliable data, advanced models and interoperable architectures—can help territories address two of today’s most urgent challenges:

• drought and water scarcity, driven by climate variability;

• leakages and non-revenue water, which undermine availability, quality and service sustainability.

Speakers will illustrate how Digital Twins can support:

• forecasting scarcity scenarios;

• optimising reservoir operations;

• prioritising maintenance and leakage reduction;

• improving emergency planning;

• enabling data-driven, predictive management.

In this vision, digitalisation becomes an enabler of efficiency, transparency and resilience, not an end in itself.

The event will also highlight the strong alignment between local needs and the emerging EU Digital Twins ecosystem. Shared European standards can accelerate scalability, integration and cross-domain interoperability—linking inland waters to coastal, ocean, agricultural and energy systems.

IDEATION will present its user-oriented reference architecture, validated through a Digital Twin of reservoirs, and a Digital Twin of the urban water cycle, co-created with stakeholders from 17 EU countries to ensure that technological choices reflect real operational needs and digital maturity levels across utilities and authorities.

The event will provide a unique opportunity to contribute to a concrete and operational discussion on the future of water management in Italy and Europe. The insights collected will inform IDEATION’s operational roadmap, guiding experimentation and investment toward measurable impacts on resilience, efficiency and loss reduction.
