IDEATION Hosts High-Level Event on Water Digitalization and Innovation for World Water Day 2025

On World Water Day 2025, the IDEATION project, in collaboration with Water Europe, the Water Association, and DIWA, will host the event ‘Advancing Digital Innovation for Water Management‘ on March 21  from 9:00 to 11:30.

The event will bring together key stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers to explore how data-driven solutions can help address Europe’s pressing water challenges.

A Vision for a Water-Smart Society

The transition towards a Water-Smart Society requires a paradigm shift in how water’s value is recognized and managed. This transformation depends on bold decisions, investments, and innovative partnerships that unite public authorities, scientists, industries, farmers, and environmental stewards. IDEATION is at the forefront of this effort, integrating inland waters into the Digital Twin Ocean (DTO), thereby laying the groundwork for improved decision-making, adaptive water management, and cross-sector collaboration.

Water-Oriented Living Labs (WOLLs) play a crucial role in this vision. As innovation ecosystems, WOLLs bridge research, policy, and practice by leveraging advanced data management, predictive modeling, and real-time monitoring. By harnessing the power of digital twins, WOLLs can test and scale water-smart solutions across different scenarios, ultimately strengthening Europe’s resilience to climate change.

Event Highlights

This event will serve as a platform to discuss how digital tools, stakeholder engagement, and international cooperation contribute to sustainable water management. Participants will hear from leading experts and institutions working towards the European Green Deal’s water-related goals. Key sessions include:

  • Water Digitalization – Presented by the Water Association and DIWA
  • Water-Oriented Living Labs for a Water-Smart Society – Keynote by Andrea Rubini (Water Europe)
  • A Digital Twin for Inland Waters: The IDEATION Approach – Presented by Eloisa Vargiu (CETaqua)
  • Multistakeholder Forum – An interactive discussion with participants on the future of water management and digital innovation

Objectives of the Event

  • Boost cooperation among Water-Oriented Living Labs (WOLLs) across Europe
  • Support the Freshwater Competence Centre of Water Europe
  • Advance the development of digital twins for inland waters, enhancing model functionalities and co-creationStrengthen scientific and international collaboration on water management and digital innovation
