KIOS Researchers Present Advances in Digital Twin Technology for Water Management at CCWI 2025

Researchers from the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus presented significant research on the future of smart water systems at the 21st International Computing & Control in the Water Industry (CCWI 2025) conference. The event provided a premier international forum for disseminating cutting-edge solutions in the water sector.

Dr. Demetrios G. Eliades, representing the KIOS research team, delivered a key presentation on the paper, “Towards Interconnected Digital Twins for Inland Waters.” This work stems from the IDEATION EU Mission project, an initiative aligned with the EU Water Resilience Strategy. The IDEATION project aims to develop a comprehensive roadmap for interoperable Digital Twins that cover the entire water cycle. The project team co-develops this roadmap through active engagement with more than 400 stakeholders across 16 European countries to identify and resolve critical interoperability challenges. The paper is co-authored by Eloisa Vargiu, Stefania Munaretto, and Gerasimos Antzoulatos.

In a second presentation, Dr. Eliades shared progress on the risk-based management of disinfection by-products (DBPs). This research utilizes digital twin technology to enhance water safety, building upon pilot results from the intoDBP EU project in collaboration with Stelios Vrachimis, Pavlos Pavlou, Marios Kyriakou, and Marios Polycarpou.

The conference also featured work from key collaborators. André Artelt presented the WaterBenchmarkHub, an open, collaborative platform developed with the European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant WaterFutures. The initiative received a positive reception from the research community, signaling a strong interest in open-source tools for water science.

KIOS anticipates continuing these important research collaborations and looks forward to welcoming the international community to the next joint conference, WDSA-CCWI 2026, scheduled to take place in Cyprus.
