“Mission Lakes” Project and IDEATION Release Strategic Policy Brief
Following the high-energy atmosphere of the 4th Mission Ocean and Waters Forum in Brussels, the IDEATION project is proud to announce the release of a landmark Mission Lakes Policy Brief.
Developed in collaboration with our four “Mission Lakes” partner projects—FutureLakes, FERRO, ProCleanLakes, and EUROLakes—this document serves as a strategic roadmap for the restoration and protection of Europe’s inland water bodies.
Why Lakes Matter
Europe is home to more than 500,000 natural lakes larger than one hectare. These are more than just bodies of water; they are vibrant ecosystems that sustain our culture, economy, and biodiversity across the continent. However, despite their immense value, they remain increasingly vulnerable to:
- Pollution and emerging contaminants.
- Hydrological alterations and over-abstraction.
- The accelerating impacts of climate change.
Key Recommendations for a “Restoration Economy”
The Policy Brief emphasizes that lake restoration is a largely untapped pillar of the European “restoration economy.” Realizing its full potential requires moving beyond niche activities toward strategic investment.
Core messages from the brief include:
- A Strategic Opportunity: The 2026–2030 EU policy cycle provides a critical window to integrate lakes more explicitly into EU policy implementation.
- Coordinated Funding: Targeted funding is essential to deliver benefits for water quality, nature restoration, and climate adaptation.
- Downstream Impact: Healthy lakes are vital not only for local communities but also for the health of downstream coastal ecosystems and the broader “blue economy.”
