Shaping the Digital Twin for inland waters: Milestones for the IDEATION Project

From January 29 to February 3, 2025, the IDEATION project hosted a series of three successful meetings with reference scenarios from Portugal, Italy, and Romania. These meetings focused on gathering key functional and non-functional requirements for the future development of a Digital Twin (DT) of inland waters, designed to operate seamlessly with the Digital Twin Ocean (DTO) from the Mission Ocean.

The discussions were dynamic, with participants actively engaging in identifying their needs and expectations for the system. These meetings served as an important platform for collaboration, ensuring that the forthcoming DT will be shaped by the specific requirements of each region. This collaborative effort will help ensure the tool’s relevance and practicality for users in these countries.

Crucially, all three reference scenarios have agreed to remain involved in the next stages of the project. By doing so, they will play an active role in refining the system’s requirements, ensuring that it not only addresses their current needs but also contributes to the broader goal of sustainable management of inland waters.

The IDEATION project is making significant progress in gathering essential functional and non-functional requirements, laying the foundation for a tool that will offer tangible, long-lasting benefits for its stakeholders and support the future of sustainable water management.
